The House of Representatives on Thursday passed the Executive Bill seeking to establish state police, marking a significant step toward restructuring Nigeria’s security architecture.
The bill was approved during plenary after the House withdrew its earlier constitutional amendment proposal on the creation of state police, opting instead to adopt the Executive Bill.
The development represents a major milestone in the country’s drive to decentralize policing and strengthen internal security amid persistent challenges such as banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism.
The Senate had earlier passed its version of the legislation, bringing Nigeria closer to adopting a dual policing system that would allow both federal and state governments to operate separate police services, subject to the completion of the constitutional amendment process and presidential assent.
