2027: Peter Obi Won’t Be on the Ballot, Uche Rochas Claims Amid NDC Court Battle

0

Nigerian businessman and social media commentator, Uche Rochas, has claimed that the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, will not appear on the ballot in the 2027 general election.

Rochas made the remark while reacting to the controversy surrounding a recent Federal High Court ruling affecting the registration of the NDC as a political party.

A Federal High Court sitting in Lokoja on Friday set aside its earlier judgment that directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC.

Justice Isah Dashen, who delivered the ruling, held that the court’s previous decision adversely affected the rights of the Peace Movement Party (PMP), which was not joined in the suit despite claiming ownership of the logo being used by the NDC.

The judgment has sparked criticism from opposition figures, who allege that the President Bola Tinubu-led administration is attempting to weaken the opposition ahead of the 2027 elections. Supporters of Peter Obi have also expressed concerns over what they describe as an alleged plot to prevent the NDC from participating in the polls.

Reacting in a post on his X account on Saturday, Rochas suggested that Obi would be excluded from the 2027 ballot if the NDC fails to secure registration.

“Peter Obi will not be on any ballot in the 2027 general election. We will certainly miss him, and the noise.

“I also feel sorry for those he deceived into spending their time and money on the NDC. Now, there will be no refunds.”

The comments have further fueled political debate, although there has been no official indication from INEC that Peter Obi has been disqualified from contesting the 2027 presidential election. The legal dispute over the NDC’s registration is expected to continue through the courts.
