Bauchi Police Deploy Mobile Courts, Begin Crackdown on Unregistered Vehicles and Fake Number Plates

The Bauchi State Police Command has commenced a statewide enforcement operation targeting unregistered vehicles and motorists using concealed, altered, or fake number plates, with mobile courts deployed to ensure the speedy prosecution of offenders.

The exercise, which began on Wednesday, was launched in compliance with a directive from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, as part of efforts to improve road safety and strengthen security across the state.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, the command disclosed that mobile courts have been stationed at the headquarters of the state’s five area commands as well as key locations within the Bauchi metropolis to facilitate the swift trial of offenders.

According to the police, the operation is focused on vehicles operating without valid registration, those with covered or obscured number plates, and vehicles displaying unauthorized or fictitious registration numbers.

Speaking on the enforcement exercise, the Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, described unregistered and unidentifiable vehicles as a major security threat.

“Unregistered and unidentifiable vehicles remain a major security risk. Such vehicles are often used to perpetrate violent crimes such as kidnapping and armed robbery. This enforcement is not aimed at harassing motorists but at protecting lives and property,” he said.

The police commissioner warned that any vehicle found in violation of the law would be impounded, while offenders would face immediate prosecution before the mobile courts.

He added that penalties would include fines and other sanctions stipulated under Nigeria’s motor vehicle registration and licensing laws.

The command urged vehicle owners and drivers to ensure their registration documents are up to date, properly display their number plates, and refrain from covering, altering, or tampering with them.

Police authorities also appealed to residents to cooperate with officers carrying out the operation, emphasizing that the enforcement exercise would be sustained without compromise.

According to the command, the initiative forms part of broader efforts to eliminate the use of untraceable vehicles by criminal elements and create a safer environment for residents across Bauchi State.
