President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has confirmed the killing of a wanted senior leader of the Islamic State (IS), Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, in a coordinated counter-terrorism operation jointly carried out by the Nigerian Armed Forces and the United States military.
The operation, conducted in the Lake Chad Basin, reportedly also led to the elimination of several of the terrorist commander’s lieutenants.
In a statement issued on Saturday, President Tinubu described the mission as a major breakthrough in the ongoing fight against terrorism, noting that the successful operation highlights the strength of security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.
According to the President, early intelligence assessments confirmed that Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, also known as Abu-Mainok, was neutralized during a targeted strike on his compound.
“Overnight, Nigeria and the United States recorded a significant example of effective collaboration in the fight against terrorism,” the statement read.
“Our determined Nigerian Armed Forces, working closely with the Armed Forces of the United States, conducted a daring joint operation that dealt a heavy blow to the ranks of the Islamic State.”
President Tinubu expressed appreciation to United States President Donald Trump for what he described as his leadership and unwavering support toward the success of the operation.
He also commended security personnel from both countries for their bravery, professionalism, and commitment to tackling terrorism.
“Nigeria appreciates this partnership with the United States in advancing our shared security objectives. I extend my sincere gratitude to President Trump for his leadership and unwavering support in this effort,” Tinubu stated.
The President further reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to intensify military offensives against terrorist groups and dismantle all remaining insurgent enclaves across the country.
“I look forward to more decisive strikes against all terrorist enclaves across the nation,” he added.
