The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called for stronger protections and reforms to safeguard workers’ rights as Nigeria marks International Workers’ Day 2026.

In a statement issued on Friday, the NBA President, Afam Osigwe, SAN praised the resilience and contributions of Nigerian workers, describing them as central to the country’s economic stability and national development.

He emphasized that Workers’ Day provides an opportunity not only to celebrate labour but also to reflect on the challenges facing workers across various sectors.

Osigwe noted that from public servants and artisans to teachers, traders, and legal practitioners, Nigerian workers continue to make daily sacrifices that shape the nation’s future.

He stressed that the protection of workers’ rights remains a constitutional responsibility, not merely a policy consideration and added that, the NBA remains committed to advocating for fair labour practices, access to justice for workers, and the enforcement of laws that uphold dignity, safety, and equity in the workplace.

The association, however, expressed concern over persistent issues affecting workers, including poor working conditions, delayed or inadequate salaries, and limited access to social protection systems.

According to the NBA, these challenges highlight the urgent need for coordinated action among government, employers, and relevant institutions.

Osigwe called for sustained reforms aimed at improving workers’ welfare, strengthening labour institutions, and ensuring justice is accessible, particularly for vulnerable groups.

The NBA President concluded by commending Nigerian workers for their dedication and perseverance, describing their efforts as the backbone of national progress.
