The Accord Party has distanced itself from a recent opposition coalition meeting held in Ibadan, where several political groups reportedly agreed to rally behind a single presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
In a strongly worded statement issued by its National Secretary, Mukhtar Abdallah, the party denied any involvement in the gathering, accusing organisers of using its name and logo without authorisation.
Describing the development as “political impersonation” rather than a mere oversight, the party expressed concern over what it called a deliberate misrepresentation of its position.
The Ibadan meeting was said to have been attended by members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and other opposition figures, with discussions centered on forming a united front to challenge Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
However, the Accord Party, under the leadership of Chris Imumolen, made it clear that it is not part of any such alliance and did not grant permission for its identity to be associated with the meeting.
“This is not an oversight; it is a misrepresentation,” the statement read, stressing that the party cannot be coerced into joining any coalition without its consent.
The party further questioned the credibility of the emerging opposition alliance, noting that the unauthorized use of its name raises concerns about the integrity of the coalition’s formation process.
Reaffirming its independence, the Accord Party stated that it remains focused on the 2027 elections and intends to field its own presidential candidate.
“The Accord Party remains focused on the 2027 general elections not as a footnote in a hastily assembled coalition,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, Imumolen has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the organisers of the Ibadan meeting to explain the unauthorised use of the party’s identity, warning that failure to do so could result in legal action.
The party concluded by asserting its readiness to defend its brand and political autonomy against any form of exploitation.
