“Nigeria’s Breakup ‘Inevitable and Just’ — Ex-US Mayor Sparks Controversy in Washington”

0

A former mayor in the United States, Mike Arnold, has stirred fresh debate over Nigeria’s unity after declaring that the country’s breakup is “likely inevitable and just.”

Arnold, who is widely known for his sympathetic stance toward the Biafra movement, made the remarks during a presentation to members of the U.S. Congress. In his address titled “Nigeria at the Crossroads: The Case for Action,” he argued that Nigeria’s current structural challenges are deeply rooted in its colonial formation.

According to him, British colonial authorities never designed Nigeria to function as a cohesive or successful nation. He suggested that the country’s ongoing political, ethnic, and security tensions are a direct consequence of that flawed foundation.

Arnold also used the platform to advocate for increased international attention on Nigeria’s internal issues, particularly the agitation for self-determination in the southeastern region.

His comments have since triggered mixed reactions, with some observers viewing them as an external validation of long-standing grievances, while others see them as an oversimplification of Nigeria’s complex realities.

The remarks come at a time when conversations around national unity, restructuring, and regional autonomy continue to shape Nigeria’s political discourse.
