The Governor of Dapo Abiodun has approved a series of palliative measures for public servants in Ogun State, including a weekly day off duty and a ₦10,000 monthly transport allowance, in response to rising fuel prices and the increasing cost of living.
The intervention, which takes effect from April 2026 and will run for an initial period of three months, is designed to ease the financial burden on workers, particularly in light of escalating transportation costs following recent fuel price hikes.
In a statement issued by the State Head of Service, Kehinde Onasanya, the government disclosed that eligible workers would be entitled to one day off per week, alongside the monthly transport allowance during the duration of the initiative.
Onasanya explained that the policy aims to provide relief for workers facing commuting challenges, while also enhancing productivity through improved staff welfare and motivation.
However, he noted that certain categories of workers will be exempted from the weekly day-off arrangement due to the critical nature of their responsibilities. These include medical personnel, judicial officers, teaching and non-teaching staff at all levels, security operatives, Accounting Officers, Heads of Departments, and other essential personnel whose duties require consistent physical presence.
Despite their exemption from the day-off policy, affected workers will continue to receive the ₦10,000 transport allowance.
The Head of Service further stated that Accounting Officers across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) will be responsible for scheduling the weekly day off for eligible staff in a manner that ensures uninterrupted service delivery.
Describing the initiative as timely, Onasanya commended Governor Abiodun for prioritizing workers’ welfare amid prevailing economic challenges. He also urged public servants to reciprocate the gesture through renewed commitment, discipline, and improved service delivery.
The palliative measures highlight the Ogun State Government’s efforts to support its workforce while sustaining efficiency in public service during a period of economic strain.
