The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMinna) chapter, has accused the Niger State Government of attempting to take over the institution’s Bosso Campus, describing the alleged move as illegal and politically motivated.
In a statement issued on Monday, the chairperson of ASUU FUTMinna, Prof. Luqman Kunle Oyewobi, said the campus is a legally acquired federal property and not subject to appropriation.
“The Bosso Campus is not an expendable parcel of land to be appropriated for political expediency. It is our academic workspace, research and learning environment, and our home,” the statement read.
According to the union, the Bosso Campus became the permanent property of FUTMinna in 1983 after the Federal Government fully paid the Niger State Government for the land. ASUU dismissed claims suggesting that the property was only temporarily leased, describing such assertions as historically inaccurate and misleading.
The union warned that any attempt to take over the campus would significantly disrupt academic activities, research work, student services, and community engagement initiatives.
ASUU called on the Federal Government, the National Assembly, and the National Universities Commission (NUC) to intervene and reaffirm federal ownership of all properties belonging to FUTMinna.
It further urged the Niger State Government to exercise restraint and embrace dialogue rather than unilateral action.
Reaffirming its stance, the union pledged to defend the autonomy, integrity, and assets of the university, stating that it would explore all lawful means to ensure the Bosso Campus remains under federal control.
