Abuja — Former Chief of Staff to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, has firmly dismissed long-standing claims that Buhari was replaced by an impostor popularly referred to as “Jubril of Sudan.”
Gambari made this clarification on Monday while responding to questions during an interview on Politics Today, aired on Channels Television.
According to him, there was never any doubt that the Buhari he worked with during the military era in 1984 was the same individual who later served as Nigeria’s president until his death.
“I’m sorry to disappoint,” Gambari said. “I had no doubt at all that the Buhari I knew in 1984 was the same person until his death. That was really quite a silly thing to say—that he was a different person.”
He attributed the persistence of the conspiracy theory to a culture of distrust among some Nigerians. “You have people in this country who believe the worst about anything and any government,” he added.
Gambari further explained that Buhari often referenced shared experiences from their time in government, including detailed discussions about events from 1984 and 1985, which, he said, clearly confirmed his identity.
“This man was talking to me when he offered me the job,” Gambari said. “He spoke in detail about the things we did in 1984 and 1985, and about the kind of loyalty he received from me.”
The comments have once again brought public attention to the long-debunked conspiracy theory that followed Buhari throughout his presidency.
