Lagos, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to all operators of articulated vehicles, tankers, and trucks to adhere strictly to traffic laws and speed limits, following a serious road crash at the crest of Apakun Bridge, inward Oshodi.
The Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa, spoke on Sunday about the incident involving a heavy-duty truck conveying Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and a privately-owned Toyota Corolla. Preliminary reports indicate that the truck, bearing plate number EKY 120 YK, was speeding when it collided with the moving silver Corolla (EKY 289 HM), causing severe traffic disruption and endangering lives.
“The force of the collision posed an immediate threat to life and property in the area,” Giwa said. Tragically, two pedestrians were struck during the crash, and the driver of the Corolla sustained serious injuries.
Officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) quickly responded to the scene, rescuing the injured and transporting them to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care. Police personnel from the Ajao Estate Division and operatives from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) were deployed to maintain order and prevent secondary incidents, while the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service managed the potential hazard from the truck’s highly combustible cargo.
Giwa condemned the rising trend of accidents caused by reckless speeding among operators of trucks, tankers, and articulated vehicles, describing such conduct as “egregiously irresponsible, dangerously negligent, and wholly contrary to the state’s goal of a safe and orderly transportation system.”
He warned that the government would not hesitate to enforce the full weight of the law against anyone found endangering lives through unlawful driving practices.
