Nigerian social media influencer Vincent Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has reacted to South African singer Tyla’s victory in the Best African Music Performance category at the 2026 Grammy Awards, where she edged out top Nigerian artistes.
DAILY POST reports that Tyla clinched the award on Sunday night with her song “Push 2 Start,” marking her second win in the category after making history with “Water” at the inaugural award in 2024.
The South African star defeated Nigerian heavyweights Ayra Starr, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Omah Lay, and Davido to secure the win.
Reacting shortly after the announcement, VDM released a video questioning Tyla’s victory and expressed disappointment that Davido did not win the award.
According to him, a win for Davido would have helped create “balance” among the Afrobeats Big 3, noting that Burna Boy and Wizkid have already won Grammy awards.
“Tyla again? Anyways, shoutout to Davido, Burna Boy, Ayra Starr and Wizkid. You guys put in the efforts,” VDM said.
“I’ll be very honest, I really wanted Davido to win so there would be balance. I like the cruise between fans of the Afrobeats Big 3 on social media.”
He added that Nigerian entries were strong but acknowledged the final outcome.
“The Nigerian songs were very good, but it is what it is,” he stated.
Notably, only female artistes have won the Best African Music Performance category since its introduction at the Grammys.
