16 Nigerian Military Officers to Face Court Martial After Probe into Indiscipline and Alleged Coup Plot – DHQ

Abuja, Nigeria – The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced that investigations into 16 officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces, accused of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations, have been concluded. The officers will now face a military Court Martial, the DHQ confirmed on Monday.

Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, stated that the Special Investigative Panel examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel. Some officers were found to have cases to answer, including allegations of plotting to overthrow the government—actions deemed inconsistent with the professional standards expected of Nigeria’s armed forces.

“These measures are purely disciplinary and are part of internal mechanisms to preserve discipline, cohesion, and operational effectiveness within the ranks,” Maj. Gen. Uba said. He also reassured the public that due process and fairness would be observed throughout the proceedings.

The arrests were first announced in October 2025. The detained officers include:

  • 1 Brigadier General – Brigadier General Musa Abubakar Sadiq
  • 1 Colonel – Colonel M.A. Ma’aji
  • 4 Lieutenant Colonels – Lt Col S. Bappah, Lt Col A.A. Hayatu, Lt Col Dangnan, Lt Col M. Almakura
  • 5 Majors – Major A.J. Ibrahim, Major M.M. Jiddah, Major M.A. Usman, Major D. Yusuf, Major I. Dauda
  • 2 Captains – Captain I. Bello, Captain A.A. Yusuf
  • 1 Army Lieutenant – Lieutenant S.S. Felix
  • 1 Navy Lieutenant Commander – Lt Commander D.B. Abdullahi
  • 1 Air Force Squadron Leader – Squadron Leader S.B. Adamu

Most of the officers are from the Infantry, Signals, and Ordnance Corps.

The DHQ emphasized that the disciplinary action is part of its commitment to professionalism, loyalty, and respect for constitutional authority.
