Rivers Lawmakers Urge Halt to Fubara Impeachment, Call for Dialogue

0

Two additional members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have joined calls for the withdrawal of impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, urging their colleagues to embrace dialogue and restraint.

The lawmakers, Barile Nwakoh, who represents Khana Constituency I, and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II, made the appeal on Wednesday, two days after similar calls were issued by two other legislators, deepening internal dissent over the impeachment move.

Earlier on Monday, Sylvanus Eyinna Nwankwo, the Minority Leader of the House and member representing Omuma State Constituency, alongside Peter Abbey of Degema State Constituency, publicly broke ranks with the Assembly leadership, cautioning against what they described as a potentially destabilising process.

The lawmakers made their position known during a press briefing in Port Harcourt, where they advocated alternatives to impeachment and hinted at possible reconciliation amid the escalating tension between the legislative and executive arms of government in the state.

Speaking at the briefing, Nwankwo disclosed that the lawmakers had received appeals from prominent leaders within and outside Rivers State, urging them to exercise leniency and prioritise peace.

He called on his colleagues to reconsider the impeachment proceedings and explore peaceful and constitutional means of resolving the dispute.

In his remarks, Abbey acknowledged allegations that the governor may have breached certain constitutional provisions but stressed that errors can occur in governance.

He added that while accountability is important, the governor also bears responsibility to ensure that any identified lapses are corrected and do not reoccur.

The growing calls for restraint highlight widening divisions within the Assembly as the political crisis in Rivers State continues to unfold.
