Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has said Nigeria’s diversity must serve as a pillar of strength and unity rather than a source of division, stressing that peace in the country is sustained through sacrifice, vigilance and collective responsibility.
Abiodun made this assertion at the Special Jumat Service marking the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, held at the Central Mosque, Kobiti, Abeokuta.
Represented by his deputy, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, the governor noted that the prevailing security challenges across the nation are a reminder that peace is never accidental. He urged Nigerians to reject violence, embrace dialogue, promote tolerance and support lawful efforts aimed at safeguarding the country.
“The Armed Forces Remembrance Day reminds us that the peace we enjoy was secured at a great cost,” Abiodun said.
“Our fallen heroes stood between our nation and chaos. They served Nigeria without regard to tribe, religion or region. They served one nation, under one flag, bound by a solemn oath. Their sacrifice continues to unite us as one people.”
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the welfare and dignity of the families of fallen heroes. He also commended the Nigerian Legion for its dedication to preserving the memories of fallen servicemen and women, advocating for their families, and mobilising support from individuals and organisations for the noble cause.
Abiodun further praised President Bola Tinubu for what he described as deliberate and sustained efforts to strengthen national unity and security. According to him, the federal government under Tinubu’s leadership is taking concrete steps to improve the welfare of security personnel, strengthen the armed forces and confront Nigeria’s complex security challenges.
In his sermon, the Mufasi of Egbaland, Alhaji Abdulai Odaranile, emphasised that security of lives and property is fundamental to any nation, warning that societies without adequate security are vulnerable to subjugation. He noted that while some security personnel paid the supreme price in defence of the nation, God is pleased with those who unite in prayer for the fallen and support their bereaved families.
Speaking on behalf of the traditional rulers, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, said security is a collective responsibility that requires the involvement of all Nigerians. He charged the military to confront security challenges head-on while staying committed to constitutional order and professionalism.
Earlier, in his welcome address, the Baba Adinni of Egbaland and former Military Administrator, Captain Abdulrasheed Raji (retd.), offered prayers for divine guidance for the president and state governors, expressing hope that their leadership would steer the nation on the path of peace, unity and progress.
