A member of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has described the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State as manageable, insisting it should not be allowed to threaten governance or stability in the state.
Agbese, who represents Ado, Okpokwu and Ogbadibo Federal Constituency and serves as Deputy Spokesman of the House, spoke amid rising political tension following the Rivers State House of Assembly’s move to commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara over allegations of gross misconduct, including financial misappropriation.
Speaking during an interview on ARISE News, Agbese cautioned against exaggerating the situation, stressing that political disagreements are not unusual during periods of transition.
He attributed the current tension partly to recent defections of the governor and several lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that some of the frictions reflect political habits carried over from their former party.
According to him, the APC operates on principles of cooperation, peace, and strong executive-legislative harmony, which he said are evident at the national level.
“In our party, we embody exemplary organisation, a strong commitment to peace and tranquility, as well as seamless executive-legislative synergy,” Agbese said.
He urged political actors in Rivers State to set aside old rivalries and align with the values of the APC, which he described as being anchored on stability and effective governance.
Agbese also called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene promptly to prevent further escalation of the crisis, appealing to all stakeholders to place peace and development above political disputes.
“I earnestly implore Mr President to intervene expeditiously and shepherd all stakeholders toward enduring unity and prosperity. Rivers State deserves, and shall attain, lasting peace,” he said.
