The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has openly vowed to frustrate the re-election bid of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, ahead of the 2027 general election.
Wike made the declaration on Sunday during a visit to Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State, accusing Governor Fubara of repeatedly reneging on political agreements reached after the 2023 elections.
According to the former Rivers governor, Fubara breached two separate agreements, insisting that the political “mistake” of 2023 would not be repeated.
“I heard people saying they will call me and give me instructions,” Wike said. “Let me tell you, there is nothing like instruction as far as Rivers State is concerned. Nobody will call me.”
He added, “You had the first agreement, somebody reneged. Second agreement, he reneged. Which call will you accept again? We will not make that mistake again.”
Wike stressed that his stance was not driven by personal ambition, noting that he remains comfortable in his current role as FCT minister.
“It has nothing to do with me as a person. As Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, I am very comfortable,” he said. “It is about the people.”
Reflecting on his time as Rivers State governor, Wike said the state commanded national respect under his leadership and was bold enough to challenge the Federal Government when necessary.
“When I was governor, Rivers State was respected nationally. When I spoke, you knew Rivers State was in charge,” he stated. “I challenged the Federal Government and we won.”
He also took a swipe at the current political climate in the state, questioning the credibility of recent claims about defending electoral mandates.
“Now that the opposition has collapsed, everybody is shouting about mandate. Why didn’t you shout about your mandate before?” Wike asked.
DAILY POST reports that tensions between Wike and Fubara have resurfaced in recent weeks, as the incumbent governor begins early moves toward securing a second term in office in 2027.
