Troops of the 8 Division, Nigerian Army, have eliminated a notorious bandits’ kingpin, Kachalla Kallamu, in a major offensive in Sabon Birnin Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The operation, carried out in collaboration with local vigilantes, took place in the early hours of Monday around Karawa village, security sources confirmed on Tuesday. Kallamu — a senior associate of wanted bandit leader Bello Turji — was killed alongside one of Turji’s key logistics suppliers.
According to reliable security sources, Kallamu, who hailed from Garin-Idi in Sabon Birni, had recently returned to the area after fleeing a previous military raid in June 2025, during which he reportedly sought refuge in Kogi State.
The latest success comes as part of intensified military pressure under Operation Farsan Yamma, which has been targeting bandit enclaves across the northwest.
Army Records Major Gains
Officials confirmed that troops also neutralised 13 suspected bandits during a separate encounter in Tarah and Karawa communities. Soldiers stationed in Kurawa near Kwanan Kimbo reportedly engaged the terrorists in a gun battle that lasted several hours.
“We counted nine bodies in our area, and another four were found in the nearby bush along the stream,” a resident told NAN, noting that troops recovered multiple weapons including eight AK-47 rifles and large quantities of ammunition.
Despite the intense clashes, the army recorded no casualties, according to military sources.
Government, Residents Commend Troops
Special Adviser to Governor Ahmad Aliyu on Security, Col. Ahmad Usman (rtd.), praised the troops for their swift response and professionalism, noting that a recent ambush attempt on traders from Tarah village was foiled by soldiers.
“Their courage prevented what could have been a tragic incident. The state government deeply appreciates these sacrifices,” he said.
Residents of Karawa and surrounding communities reportedly celebrated the military breakthrough, urging security forces to sustain the momentum to prevent further attacks.
Similarly, the member representing Sabon Birni in the Sokoto State House of Assembly, Aminu Boza, confirmed that at least nine bodies believed to be those of the terrorists had been recovered, with more searches underway.
Communities in Sabon Birni LGA, including Gatawa, have suffered repeated attacks in recent years, making the latest military gains a significant relief for locals.
