Factional National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party (LP), Abayomi Arabambi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu for including former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, on the new list of ambassadorial nominees.
Speaking in an interview with Arise News, Arabambi said although every nominee has the constitutional right to be considered, Omokri should not have been on the list due to his long history of publicly criticising President Tinubu.
He explained that while the President reserves the constitutional prerogative to nominate ambassadors, the final approval lies with the Senate.
“The president has the prerogative to nominate his ambassadors, but they must appear before the Senate, where their résumés will be scrutinised,” he said.
Arabambi expressed confidence that the Akpabio-led Senate would carry out a thorough screening process. He recalled that some ministerial nominees in the past were rejected during confirmation, adding that the same level of scrutiny should be expected.
He dismissed the political tension surrounding some nominees, urging Nigerians to allow the Senate to perform its constitutional duty.
Arabambi, however, singled out Omokri as the only person he believed should not have made the list.
“While Reno Omokri is qualified, his history of criticizing the president on several occasions may count against him,” he said.
The Senate is expected to begin screening of the nominees in the coming days.
