Jalingo, Taraba State – The Minister of Regional Affairs, Uba Maigeri, has dismissed claims circulating on social media that he misappropriated N16.5 billion intended for the reconstruction of the collapsed Namnai Bridge in Gassol Local Government Area.
The allegations, made by social media user Abdulmumuni Imam, also accused the minister of seeking his arrest for criticizing the handling of the project and claimed he had obtained security directives to detain him.
Speaking to journalists on Friday in Jalingo, Maigeri’s legal counsel, Dr. Ibrahim Effiong, described the claims as “unfounded and malicious.” He emphasized that the minister, a respected lawyer, has not engaged in any wrongdoing.
Effiong acknowledged Nigerians’ right to freedom of expression but warned against its misuse on social media. “People should not use social media to run others down. If you make serious allegations, you must also be ready to justify them when called upon,” he said.
The lawyer confirmed that Maigeri has initiated legal action, urging Imam to appear in court and substantiate his claims. “The matter is already before the court. Like every citizen, the minister has the right to seek legal remedy,” Effiong added.
He further commended Maigeri’s measured response, calling for greater respect for public officials. “If all Nigerians handled situations like the minister, I believe Nigeria would be a greater country,” he said.
