The Labour Party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has reaffirmed that former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, remains a member of the party.

Addressing journalists after the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja — a session observed by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) — Baba-Ahmed dismissed swirling rumours claiming Obi had left the party.

“To the best of our knowledge, our brother, His Excellency Peter Obi, is still a member of the Labour Party. Nothing has changed. If he were here now, I would have shifted my seat to the left for him,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed noted that despite internal challenges in recent months, the party had emerged stronger and more united. He described INEC’s presence at the meeting as a “major boost” and a validation of the party’s processes.

“The Labour Party has not reduced in any way. We have only increased in numbers. With the submission of our National Secretary, we acknowledge that we went through rough times, as is common with political associations, but we have come out stronger,” he stated.

He added that the NEC meeting marked a turning point, signalling renewed reconciliation efforts aimed at strengthening the party ahead of future national responsibilities.

“As law-abiding citizens, we strictly follow what the law provides. This is a renewed drive for reconciliation, and I am here as a loyal party member to welcome both new and returning members back to the fold,” Baba-Ahmed said.

The Labour Party leadership insists the latest developments reflect a new phase of unity as it prepares for political engagements in the coming months.
