In a decisive move to tackle Nigeria’s escalating abduction crisis, the Senate has adopted a resolution categorizing kidnapping as a form of terrorism. Lawmakers are calling for amendments to the Terrorism Act to ensure that anyone convicted of kidnapping faces the strictest punishment.

During Wednesday’s plenary session, senators agreed that, once the law is revised, all individuals found guilty of kidnapping would automatically face the death penalty.

“The resolution mandates that, upon conviction for kidnapping, the death penalty must be enforced,” the Senate declared, underscoring the urgent need for stronger deterrents against the rising wave of abductions across the country.

Lawmakers stressed that the move is intended to send a clear message to criminals and curb the ongoing menace.

More details on the legislative process and next steps are expected to follow.
