A faction of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, led by Nafiu Bala Gombe, has rejected the purported registration of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, insisting that the process did not follow the party’s constitutional procedures.
According to the group, Atiku’s registration at the Jada 1 Ward in Jada Local Government Area, Adamawa State, was carried out by individuals not recognised by the party’s national leadership.
Christopher O. Okechukwu, Director of Media and Public Affairs for the faction, said the development violates the ADC constitution, adding that the party has repeatedly advised Atiku to register through duly constituted ward executives — a step he has yet to take.
“This registration was conducted by individuals who are not recognised by the ADC’s National Headquarters and therefore lack the authority to register new members,” Okechukwu said. “We have consistently urged Mr. Abubakar to complete his registration with the authentic party executives in his locality.”
The faction warned that the move may be part of a broader strategy to leverage the ADC while Atiku awaits possible reconciliation with the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP— a pattern the party claims it has observed in the past.
With the ADC currently entangled in a leadership dispute, including a pending court case over the legitimacy of David Mark’s leadership, the faction urged Atiku and his coalition partners to act with caution and respect the party’s internal structures.
“Our party is not merely a platform for individual ambition; it is a movement for democratic renewal,” the statement added. “We remain committed to transparency, due process, and strengthening unity within the ADC.”
This development comes barely 24 hours after Atiku announced on X that he had officially joined the ADC, posting a photo of himself holding his membership card. His move follows his resignation from the PDP in July after prolonged internal crises within the opposition party.
