Dangote Group Pledges $700 Million to End Nigeria’s Sugar Import Dependence

Dangote Group is set to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported sugar with a bold investment exceeding $700 million to expand local production.

The initiative, led by Dangote Sugar Refinery—a subsidiary of the conglomerate—will cover land development, infrastructure, equipment, workforce training, and community engagement. The goal is to build a robust supply chain capable of producing enough raw sugar to meet domestic demand while supporting future industrial growth.

Speaking at the 2025 Lagos International Trade Fair, Dangote Sugar Refinery CEO Ravindra Singhvi emphasized that the expansion aligns with the company’s backward-integration strategy. The new sugar products will be available in 100g, 250g, 500g, and 1kg packs, making them accessible to both households and small businesses.

Fatima Aliko-Dangote, Group Executive Director of Commercial Operations, said the broader objective is to strengthen Nigeria’s industrial base, retain more of the value chain locally, and create jobs. She highlighted that industrial growth also supports small businesses that depend on domestic manufacturing.

Represented at the event by Funmi Sanni, Dangote Cement’s Sales and Marketing Director, she noted the sugar project complements the group’s ongoing investments in refining, fertilizers, and petrochemicals.

Dangote Sugar Refinery remains Nigeria’s largest sugar producer, with an annual capacity of 1.44 million metric tonnes. In the first nine months of the 2025 fiscal year, the company recorded revenue of N626.24 billion, up from N484.42 billion in the same period last year, while losses shrank from N184.4 billion to N10.59 billion.
