Afrobeats star Simisola Kosoko, better known by her stage name Simi, has expressed deep pride in being Nigerian, describing the resilience and vibrancy of Nigerians as something the world cannot replicate.
Speaking on a recent episode of the 90s Baby Show, the Joromi crooner said her favourite thing about Nigeria is the spirit of its people — a quality she believes makes Nigerians stand out everywhere in the world.
“My favourite thing about Nigeria is just the spirit of Nigerians. You can’t replicate it,” Simi said. “Nobody else can be a Nigerian other than a Nigerian. Even when they’re faking African accents in Hollywood movies, they never actually fake a Nigerian accent.”
According to the award-winning singer, the uniqueness of Nigerians goes beyond culture or language — it’s a natural confidence and authenticity that can’t be imitated.
“They always fake East African and South African accents,” she added. “Being a Nigerian doesn’t just come as naturally; it just feels like home.”
However, Simi also expressed regret that many Nigerians are forced to migrate in search of better opportunities. She said the country’s persistent challenges have made life difficult for citizens who would otherwise prefer to stay.
“That is why I wish the country was better,” she said. “Because I feel like no one would want to leave.”
Simi, who has been one of the leading voices in modern Afrobeats, has often used her platform to speak on social issues, identity, and hope for a better Nigeria.
