Fubara Explains Why He Didn’t Challenge Tinubu’s Suspension, State of Emergency

PORT HARCOURT — Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has revealed why he refrained from challenging in court the six-month suspension slammed on him by President Bola Tinubu alongside the declaration of a state of emergency in the state.

Speaking in a state-wide broadcast on Friday shortly after his reinstatement and the lifting of the emergency rule by the president, Fubara said his decision was guided by personal conviction and a spirit of sacrifice.

“As your Governor, I accepted to abide by the state of emergency declaration and chose to cooperate with Mr. President,” he stated.

According to him, despite mounting pressure from different quarters to contest the constitutionality of the president’s action in court, he resisted because he believed reconciliation was the best path for the state.

“This was why I also resisted the pressure to challenge the constitutionality of the declaration of a state of emergency, the suspension of democratic institutions, and all other actions that we endured during this difficult period,” Fubara explained.

The governor stressed that his choice was borne out of a desire to preserve peace, stability, and cooperation with the federal government, even during what he described as one of the most trying moments of his administration.
