OSOGBO — Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has directed the state’s Attorney-General to institute legal proceedings against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the freezing of a state government bank account.
The directive follows the restriction placed on an Osun State Government account domiciled with First Bank by the anti-graft agency.
Speaking with journalists at the Government House in Osogbo, Governor Adeleke described the action as a violation of the rule of law and demanded an explanation from the Chairman of the EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, regarding the reason for freezing the account.
The governor urged Nigerians and residents of Osun State to closely monitor the development, describing it as an issue of significant public interest.
“I ask the EFCC Chairman to explain to the good people of Osun State and Nigerians at large why the Osun State Government account was frozen and provide evidence to justify the action,” Adeleke said.
He further alleged that the move, alongside what he described as other actions targeted at the state, undermines democratic principles.
“This and other actions being taken against Osun State are turning our democracy into a huge joke,” the governor added.
As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had not publicly responded to Adeleke’s allegations or disclosed the basis for freezing the account.
