MINNA — The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE, Internal), 54 days after the last paper was written.
Announcing the results at a press conference in Minna on Wednesday, NECO Registrar, Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi, revealed that out of the 1,358,339 candidates who sat for the June/July examination, 818,492 — representing 60.26 per cent — secured five credits and above, including Mathematics and English.
According to him, a total of 1,144,496 candidates, or 84.26 per cent, had five credits and above irrespective of Mathematics and English.
“The number of candidates that registered for the examination was 1,367,210, comprising 685,514 males and 681,696 females. Out of these, 1,358,339 sat for the exam,” Wushishi said.
On candidates with special needs, he disclosed that 1,622 were recorded, including 941 with hearing impairment and 191 with visual impairment.
The NECO boss also reported a sharp decline in examination malpractice cases, with 3,878 cases recorded in 2025, compared to 10,094 in 2024 — a 61.58 per cent drop.
He, however, said 38 schools across 13 states were caught engaging in mass cheating, while nine supervisors from Rivers, Niger, FCT, Kano, and Osun were recommended for blacklisting due to misconduct.
Wushishi further explained that examinations in eight schools in Adamawa State were disrupted by communal clashes between July 7 and 25, affecting 13 subjects and 29 papers. Talks are ongoing with the state government to reschedule the affected exams.
Providing state-by-state performance, he noted that Kano led with 68,159 candidates (5.020 per cent) achieving five credits and above including Mathematics and English. Lagos followed with 67,007 candidates (4.930 per cent), while Oyo placed third with 48,742. Gabon emerged the least performing centre, with no candidate hitting the benchmark.
He added that, in line with the reviewed curriculum, NECO will now conduct SSCE in only 38 subjects to reduce result processing time.
The 2025 SSCE (Internal) was held from Monday, June 16, to Friday, July 25, 2025.
