Natasha Blocked From Senate Return as Appeal Court Case Stalls Suspension Review

ABUJA — The National Assembly has barred Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central (PDP), from resuming her legislative duties, insisting her six-month suspension remains in force pending the outcome of an ongoing court case.

Akpoti-Uduaghan had, in a letter dated September 4, 2025, notified the leadership of her intention to return, arguing that her suspension, which began on March 6, had elapsed.

But in a response signed by the Acting Clerk to the National Assembly, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, she was informed that her suspension is still active since the matter is before the Court of Appeal.

The senator, who was suspended after a heated clash with Senate President Godswill Akpabio over seating arrangements during plenary, had challenged the decision at the Federal High Court but lost. She subsequently took the case to the appellate court.

Danzaria explained that the National Assembly would not take any administrative steps until the judicial process is concluded.

“The matter, therefore, remains sub judice, and until the judicial process is concluded and the Senate formally reviews the suspension in the light of the court’s pronouncement, no administrative action can be taken by this office to facilitate your resumption,” the letter read.

The Assembly assured Akpoti-Uduaghan that she would be duly informed of the Senate’s final position once the appellate court delivers its verdict.
