Anambra Governorship Poll: INEC Adds 146,000 New Voters, Pushes State Roll to 2.8m

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the completion of voter registration ahead of the November governorship election in Anambra State, adding over 146,000 fresh voters to the electoral roll.

In a statement issued after its weekly meeting on Thursday, the Commission revealed that the exercise, conducted across the 326 wards in the state between July 8 and 20, 2025, recorded 168,187 new registrants. However, 27,817 entries were flagged and removed as multiple or double registrations through the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).

“Consequently, the figure for new registrants now stands at 140,370, while valid applications for transfer into the State total 5,983, bringing the overall addition to 146,353 voters,” said Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee.

With this development, Anambra’s voter population has risen from 2,656,437 to 2,802,790.

A breakdown by Local Government Area shows Idemili North leading with 246,318 voters (8.79%), followed by Awka South with 216,611 (7.73%) and Ogbaru with 188,016 (6.71%). Dunukofia and Anambra West trail with 83,580 (2.98%) and 71,332 (2.55%) voters respectively.

The Commission also confirmed that the list of new registrants has been displayed in all wards for claims and objections, as required by the Electoral Act 2022.

INEC assured that Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) for the new voters will be ready and available for collection well before the election.
