PORT HARCOURT — The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced that Governor Siminalayi Fubara will officially return to office on September 18 following his six-month suspension.
State APC Chairman, Chief Tony Okocha, made the disclosure while addressing journalists in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, stressing that the party is prepared to work with the governor once he resumes, but will not compromise on accountability.
“The governor who was suspended will return to office on September 18. The APC will work with him when he returns,” Okocha said.
He noted that the arrangement would not prevent the party from constructively criticising the governor where necessary.
“There are states where the governor and assembly members are in different parties, so we are going to work with him. However, that will not take away our right to criticise him when he does wrong. But for us, the LG chairmen will work with him, except that we will not agree to vicious policies,” he added.
President Bola Tinubu had, on March 18, declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy, and the state House of Assembly, while appointing a sole administrator to oversee the affairs of the state.
Now, with his return date fixed, political watchers are keenly observing how the governor’s comeback and APC’s promised cooperation will shape Rivers’ political landscape.
