Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the conduct of the local government election in Rivers State, describing the exercise as “shameful” and a “travesty” of democracy.
In a statement posted on X on Sunday, Atiku accused a “power cabal” of attempting to overturn the democratic rights of Rivers people at all costs, insisting that the polls lacked legitimacy.
“The local government election conducted by the occupation government in Rivers State is an awful absurdity and a travesty to the very notion of elective democracy,” Atiku said.
He alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) had demonstrated a willingness to “throw caution to the wind” in order to secure political advantage, warning that such actions posed a dangerous threat to Nigeria’s democracy under President Bola Tinubu.
Calling on opposition parties in Rivers to reject the results, the former vice president argued that the election was conducted by a government “extraneous to our laws, with absolutely no legitimacy to undertake such a crucial and sensitive assignment.”
Atiku also expressed solidarity with Rivers residents, whom he described as “victims of political brigandry,” pledging his support as they resist attempts to undermine their democratic rights.
