Kwankwaso Quashes Defection Rumours, Declares NNPP “Beautiful Bride” Ahead of 2027

ABUJA — National Leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has dismissed speculations about his defection to another political platform, insisting that he remains firmly committed to the NNPP.

Speaking at the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Thursday, Kwankwaso described recent reports about his political future as fake news, stressing that the NNPP was growing stronger, particularly in Kano State.

“We are very happy about the performance of our party, especially in Kano and other states. Let me take this opportunity to tell you that we have our party, and we are comfortable. We are happy,” Kwankwaso said.

He assured party members that any discussions regarding alliances ahead of the 2027 elections would be a collective decision, guided by the principle of party supremacy.

“If there will be any negotiation, it will be collective. It will not be only for the negotiators but for the entire NNPP family. The fact remains that there is nobody in Kwankwasia or NNPP today that I know who is saying, ‘yes, I want to go,’” he declared.

Kwankwaso also advised members not to be distracted by the ongoing wave of defections among Nigerian politicians, describing such moves as signs of inexperience.

He recalled how he lost his re-election bid as governor of Kano in 2003 due to public support for the late Muhammadu Buhari, only to reclaim power eight years later. According to him, the lesson underscored the need for patience and political resilience.

“Reality will determine the people’s votes in 2027. Nigerians have already made up their minds,” he added.

In his remarks, NNPP National Chairman, Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, described the party as “the beautiful bride of Nigerian politics and democracy” as it gears up for the next general elections.

Also speaking, Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf—represented by his deputy, Aminu Gwarzo—claimed the party won two recent by-elections in the state but was denied victory. He expressed confidence that the mandate would be restored.

The NNPP’s 2023 vice presidential candidate, Bishop Isaac Idahosa, said the party was on course to secure victory in 2027, pointing to its “focused direction” under Kwankwaso’s leadership.

Highlights of the NEC meeting included the inauguration of caretaker committees for Kogi, Gombe, Taraba, and Jigawa states, as well as the extension of the Lagos State chairman’s tenure.

The event was attended by NEC-elected political officers, party stakeholders, and an observer team from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
