Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has threatened legal action against outspoken human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, over alleged defamatory remarks made against him on social media.
In a notice issued by his legal representatives, EJESIMEN & CO MADIBA CHAMBERS, SAN, Obi accused Adeyanju of persistently publishing damaging statements about him on X (formerly Twitter) and other platforms. The petition specifically cited an August 21 post where Adeyanju alleged that Obi looted Anambra State’s coffers to fund his family business.
Adeyanju further claimed that Obi once attempted to give him money under the guise of appreciation, insisting, “It’s 100% true.”
Obi’s legal team has demanded a full retraction of the statements and a public apology from the activist.
But in a sharp response via his official Facebook page on Wednesday night, Adeyanju dismissed the notice and welcomed the legal battle.
“I can’t wait to meet him in court finally. A fraud parading himself as a messiah,” Adeyanju wrote.
The lawyer, a vocal critic of Obi, has repeatedly clashed with the former governor’s supporters — popularly known as Obidients — over his unfavorable posts. He has consistently argued that Obi stands no chance of becoming Nigeria’s president, recently declaring on Facebook that “it is too late” for the Labour Party leader to achieve that ambition.
