Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has dismissed the possibility of any political figure — including former President Goodluck Jonathan — defeating Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Bwala poured cold water on recent calls for Jonathan to contest, describing them as a calculated plot to tarnish the former president’s carefully rebuilt global image.
“I see that some unscrupulous elements are trying to hoodwink former President Goodluck Jonathan into returning to politics so they can destroy his reputation, which he has been building internationally since leaving office,” Bwala said.
The presidential aide argued that the political tide in southern Nigeria — Jonathan’s home base — has shifted in Tinubu’s favour, citing the support of several governors. He also questioned the motives of northern politicians encouraging Jonathan’s comeback, recalling that some were instrumental in ousting him from power.
“The elements in the north urging him to run — were they not the ones that chased him away? What hope does he have that they now mean well for him? The political class cajoling him knows what they are doing. I believe President Jonathan is wiser than that,” he stated.
Bwala expressed confidence that Tinubu would defeat any challenger in 2027, Jonathan included.
“If President Jonathan decides to run, I will still say this — based on facts, not conjecture — there is not a single politician today with the capacity to knock off President Bola Tinubu,” he declared.
Jonathan has not yet indicated whether he intends to join the presidential race.
