ABUJA — Former Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Farouk Adamu Aliyu, has declared that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will do everything politically possible to ensure President Bola Ahmed Tinubu retains power, warning that efforts by opposition groups to unseat him in 2027 will not succeed.
In a candid interview on Arise News, Aliyu alleged that certain political actors are working behind the scenes to frustrate Tinubu’s re-election bid, particularly through emerging coalitions like the one under the African Democratic Congress (ADC). But according to him, the APC is fully prepared to crush any such movement.
“Certain people are going out with a script to make sure APC does not see the light of day, or Tinubu does not win his election,” Aliyu said. “Sadly, we will not allow that to happen — because that’s politics.”
He emphasized that while democracy thrives on opposition, the APC will not fold its arms and allow the opposition “rear their heads.”
“We have no problem with anybody trying to oppose us — absolutely none. But politically speaking, we shall do everything possible to make sure they don’t wear their heads,” he said. “And I mean it, because that’s politics.”
Aliyu, a key figure in Nigeria’s political establishment, reflected on how politicians across party lines once united to oust former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.
“You remember when all those people — I mean, those now out of APC — we all ganged up to bring down Goodluck Jonathan. That’s what we did together. We used to be one family, one party, one people,” he said.
Touching on the relationship among Nigeria’s political elite, Aliyu admitted that despite the seeming party rivalries, top politicians are often united by class interests. The real victims, he noted, are the ordinary citizens who suffer while fighting proxy battles for the elite.
“The elites don’t fight each other. The masses are the ones who kill themselves because of us,” he stated. “At the elite level, there’s no Muslim or Christian, no North or South — we are not enemies. But sadly, the masses haven’t understood this.”
Aliyu also admitted that the country’s major problems are caused by the elite class, calling for political maturity and an end to toxic rhetoric.
His comments have sparked fresh conversations around the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic system, especially ahead of the 2027 elections, where opposition figures like Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar are expected to play major roles.
