The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has thrown its weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election, despite belonging to the opposition.
This surprising endorsement was announced on Monday by the state PDP Chairman, Hon. Abayomi Tella, during the official campaign flag-off and inauguration of the campaign council for the Remo Federal Constituency bye-election candidate, Bolarinwa Oluwole. The event was held at the palace of the Akarigbo of Remoland in Sagamu.
Tella explained that the PDP’s support for Tinubu stems from regional loyalty. “We will support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Though he is in the opposition, let us support our own from the Southwest. Our support is for Tinubu, and we will stand by him. We are ready to give him our votes,” he declared.
Calling for fairness and justice in the 2027 election, Tella downplayed the recent defection of former governorship running mate Adekunle Akinlade and others to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing them as politically insignificant. “Those who left—what did they contribute to the party? Even their polling units, they couldn’t deliver. We are not moved,” he said.
Also speaking at the event, 2023 PDP governorship candidate, Hon. Ladi Adebutu, reaffirmed the party’s support for President Tinubu while vowing to challenge what he termed as “bad governance” in Ogun State under Governor Dapo Abiodun.
“I was with the President in January and told him that we have no issue with his leadership and candidacy,” Adebutu said. “However, we do have an issue with poor governance in Ogun State, and that’s why this bye-election is crucial—it’s a chance to punish bad governance and restore sanity.”
He highlighted the PDP’s strength in the Remo Federal Constituency, noting that the party won 34 out of 35 wards in the last election.
The PDP candidate for the bye-election, Hon. Bolarinwa Oluwole, pledged quality and people-focused representation if elected. The party’s national vice chairman, Engr. Kamorudeen Ajisafe, presented the PDP flag to Bolarinwa as a symbol of official endorsement.
The Remo Federal Constituency seat became vacant following the death of Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga earlier this year. The bye-election is seen as a litmus test ahead of the 2027 general elections.
