Zurmi, Zamfara State – August 2, 2025 — In a chilling development that underscores the shifting tactics of armed groups in Nigeria’s northwest, a notorious bandit leader known as Sani Black has reportedly demanded 150 kilogrammes of pure gold from four communities in Zamfara State as a “protection levy.”
The affected villages — Dada, Gidan Shaho, Marmaro, and Rimni — all located in Zurmi Local Government Area, were issued the ultimatum recently, marking a stark departure from the more common demands for cash, food supplies, or livestock.
Local sources suggest the unusual request may be tied to the region’s history of informal and illegal gold mining, which has drawn the attention of criminal groups looking to diversify their revenue streams amid worsening economic conditions.
“He believes many people in the communities are involved in gold mining and therefore capable of meeting the demand,” said a youth leader from the area who spoke under condition of anonymity due to safety concerns.
Another resident, also speaking anonymously, said the armed group appears to have adapted its extortion strategy. “They know we no longer have money or animals to give them, so they’ve turned to what they believe we still possess — gold,” he said.
The demand has reportedly sparked intense fear and anxiety among residents, with community leaders now exploring options to either negotiate a reduction or source the gold collectively to avoid attacks.
For over a decade, Zamfara State has been plagued by insecurity, with bandit groups engaging in large-scale violence, abductions, and economic exploitation. Several factions have taken control of informal mining sites, using them as a source of income and leverage over local populations.
Security analysts have warned that the latest development reflects a dangerous evolution in the modus operandi of armed groups, who are increasingly integrating themselves into the region’s illicit economy.
As of the time of this report, neither the state government nor security agencies have officially commented on the incident. Residents are urging for urgent intervention to prevent further escalation and ensure the safety of the communities under threat.
