The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering strong diplomatic relations with the United States of America and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), despite recent adjustments in visa policies affecting Nigerian citizens.
This assurance was conveyed in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy.
The statement comes in response to new visa issuance conditions introduced by the US and UAE, which have raised concerns among Nigerian travellers.
Onanuga noted that relevant ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) are actively engaging through diplomatic channels to address the issues constructively. He emphasized that Nigeria remains committed to upholding its international obligations while working to resolve any underlying concerns.
DAILY POST recalls that the United States recently adjusted its visa policies for Nigerian nationals, citing high rates of visa overstays and the need for more reliable access to applicants’ records. The move, the US government stated, is part of a broader global visa reciprocity process that regularly undergoes review.
In response, President Tinubu has directed all federal agencies to ensure full compliance with international protocols and to enhance cooperation in verifying the identities of Nigerians seeking consular services abroad.
The President also called on Nigerians living overseas to respect the immigration laws of their host countries and maintain the integrity of their travel documents and privileges.
Regarding reports of new transit visa conditions introduced by the UAE for Nigerians, the Federal Government clarified that it has not received any official communication from UAE authorities on a revised visa policy. Nonetheless, it assured the public that any legitimate concerns are being addressed in the spirit of mutual respect and bilateral cooperation.
“The current administration will continue to pursue the best possible outcomes for Nigerians abroad, ensuring that they can travel, work, and live with dignity and respect across the world,” the statement read.
This position aligns with the Tinubu administration’s 4-D Foreign Policy agenda, which places significant emphasis on engaging with the Nigerian diaspora and strengthening global partnerships.
