The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather forecast indicating widespread thunderstorms and rain showers across the country from Monday to Wednesday.
According to the outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, early morning thunderstorms—accompanied by or without rainfall—are expected in northern states including Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Taraba, Adamawa, and Kaduna. The rest of the northern region is likely to remain sunny with patches of clouds.
NiMet further projected that afternoon and evening thunderstorms with rains will develop over parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Kano, Katsina, Gombe, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Kaduna States.
In the central region, morning thunderstorms are expected in Niger, Plateau, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), while other areas will experience partly cloudy skies. Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms are anticipated in Plateau, FCT, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, and Niger States.
The southern region will witness cloudy conditions with light morning rain in Ogun, Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States. Afternoon and evening periods are likely to bring thunderstorms with light rainfall in Ogun, Lagos, Ondo, Oyo, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.
By Tuesday, sunny skies with cloud patches are expected across most northern states, with chances of scattered morning thunderstorms in Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Yobe, Sokoto, Jigawa, Bauchi, and Kaduna. Afternoon and evening periods will bring thunderstorms with light rains in parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Gombe, Borno, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, and Bauchi.
Central states including the FCT, Niger, Kogi, and Benue will experience morning thunderstorms, while later in the day, Nasarawa, FCT, Benue, Kogi, and Plateau can expect thunderstorms with light rainfall.
In the South, cloudy skies will persist with light morning showers over Akwa Ibom and Cross River, followed by thunderstorms and light rains later in the day across the region.
On Wednesday, the northern region will wake up to thunderstorms in Zamfara, Kebbi, Borno, Yobe, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Gombe, Bauchi, and Sokoto. These will intensify into heavy rains by afternoon and evening, particularly in Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Jigawa, Taraba, and Adamawa.
The central region is expected to start the day under cloudy skies, with moderate rains and thunderstorms forecasted for the afternoon and evening.
Across the South, residents should brace for light rainfall throughout the day.
NiMet also warned of strong winds likely to precede rainfall in some areas, urging the public to secure loose objects, avoid driving under heavy rain, and disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms.
Additionally, residents are advised to stay away from tall trees and avoid flood-prone areas. Airline operators are encouraged to obtain detailed, airport-specific weather reports from NiMet to ensure safe flight planning.
The agency emphasized the importance of safety precautions to minimize the risk of accidents and weather-related disruptions.
