With about 100 days to Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, the country has yet to experience the usual political excitement associated with an approaching election, chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Buba Galadima, has said.
Galadima made the observation during an interview with Arise TV on Wednesday, describing the political atmosphere as unusually quiet ahead of the elections.
According to him, the situation is particularly concerning because several politicians outside the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are allegedly uncertain about their chances of participating in the election.
“We are only 100 days away from the general election, yet the election fever has not caught the country at all,” he said.
Galadima further claimed that some opposition politicians were facing pressure and inducements allegedly aimed at persuading them to withdraw from the race in favour of APC candidates.
He alleged that some candidates contesting state House of Assembly seats were being offered N50 million to step down, while House of Representatives candidates were allegedly being offered N200 million and a vehicle to surrender their tickets.
“I don’t think there is any candidate outside APC that is sure of contesting this election,” the NDC chieftain said.
He added that the alleged inducements were part of efforts to weaken opposition participation ahead of the 2027 elections.
“Every member of the House of Assembly who agrees to forfeit his ticket and withdraw for an APC candidate is being given N50 million.
“Every House of Reps member who agrees to let go his candidature will be given N200 million with a car,” he alleged.
Galadima’s comments come amid ongoing political realignments, consultations and preparations by political parties and aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections.
