Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi lack the political structure needed to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking at a public event in Kano over the weekend, Ganduje described Northern Nigeria as the decisive region in presidential elections, arguing that neither opposition figure has the grassroots support required to secure victory in the region.
“The North is strategic in every presidential election in Nigeria. With due respect to our friends in the opposition, neither Peter Obi nor Atiku Abubakar can mobilise sufficient support in this region to defeat President Tinubu in 2027,” he said.
Ganduje also dismissed ongoing opposition coalition efforts, insisting that both Atiku and Obi have yet to establish the robust political structures needed across the North to make significant electoral gains.
He further urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to tighten the requirements for registering political parties, saying only parties with functional structures, clear ideologies and a genuine nationwide presence should be allowed to participate in elections.
According to him, stricter registration standards would strengthen Nigeria’s democracy by ensuring that only viable political parties contest elections.
