Abdullahi Sule’s election as Nasarawa State’s governor has been upheld by the Court of Appeal in Abuja. In a ruling reached unanimously by a panel of three justices, the appeal court overturned the Nasarawa state governorship election petition tribunal’s decision to dismiss Sule, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate.
Judge Uchechukwu Onyemenam led the three-member panel that delivered the ruling, which stated that the tribunal had erred in law when it concluded that Governor Sule had not received the majority of the votes cast in the election. The Court further declared that a fair hearing was not afforded to the governor.
Remember that Sule received 347,209 votes to be proclaimed the election’s victor by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). With 283,016 votes, David Ombugadu, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) nominee, came in second.
The PDP candidate, however, had voiced displeasure with the results of the gubernatorial race, pointing to purported anomalies. The electoral petition tribunal in Lafia pronounced Ombugadu the winner on October 2, nullifying Sule’s victory.
