The Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The announcement was made on Monday at the Government House in Gusau by the Deputy Governor, Mani Mummuni, who spoke on behalf of the governor.
Mummuni said the decision followed extensive consultations with political stakeholders across the state. According to him, the governor convened a high-level meeting at the Rescue Hall of the Government House in Gusau, where party leaders and key political figures endorsed the move after reviewing the political situation in Zamfara.
He explained that the governor’s defection was largely influenced by the deepening internal crisis within the PDP and the need to strengthen political unity to effectively address the state’s security and development challenges.
The deputy governor added that stakeholders advised the governor to align with the ruling party’s “Renewed Hope” agenda in order to promote stability, progress, and development both in Zamfara State and across the country.
Mummuni also called on supporters and political stakeholders in the state to begin registering with the APC as the party opens its electronic membership registration platform to expand its base in Zamfara.
He assured residents that the decision reflects the governor’s commitment to fostering unity, stability, and accelerated development for the people of the state.
Lawal’s defection follows weeks of speculation about a possible move away from the PDP, which intensified after the Court of Appeal judgment concerning the party’s convention held in Oyo State earlier on Monday.
