The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has officially stepped down from his position, marking the start of a leadership transition within Nigeria’s electoral body.
Yakubu, who was reappointed for a second five-year term on December 9, 2020, made the announcement during a meeting with the commission’s Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on Tuesday.
Following his exit, INEC National Commissioner Barrister May Agbamuche-Mbu has assumed office as Acting Chairman, pending the appointment of a substantive successor by the President.
Agbamuche-Mbu, who currently heads the commission’s Legal Services, Clearance & Complaints Committee (LSCCC), hails from the southern region of the country.
Yakubu’s resignation aligns with the constitutional term limit. He had earlier vacated the position at the end of his first tenure in November 2020 before being reappointed and confirmed by the Senate.
In an emotional farewell message, Professor Yakubu expressed heartfelt appreciation to INEC staff and Resident Electoral Commissioners nationwide for their unwavering dedication and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy during his tenure.
