Wike Slams Calls for Jonathan’s 2027 Comeback: “It’s a Plot to Create Crisis”

ABUJA — Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has warned that moves to drag former President Goodluck Jonathan into the 2027 presidential race are a recipe for political turmoil.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday night, Wike described the calls as hypocritical, noting that the same political forces who abandoned Jonathan in 2015 are now pushing for his return under the guise of a “one-term presidency.”

“Anybody saying Jonathan should return because he will only do one term is only looking for a crisis. These are the same people who frustrated him in 2015. Why now? Jonathan has made a name for himself globally, and they just want to drag him into unnecessary conflict,” Wike said.

The minister cautioned against destabilising the nation’s fragile political balance by fronting Jonathan or any southern candidate with promises of a single-term government, describing the move as insincere and dangerous.

On the state of the nation, Wike admitted that Nigerians are facing economic hardship but maintained that President Bola Tinubu is making bold and necessary choices to reposition the country.

“Yes, there is hardship. I agree. But no one can deny that this government is making efforts to improve things. I see the projects in Abuja daily; they are evidence that something is happening,” he stressed.

Wike also took a swipe at former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, dismissing his warnings of a looming revolution over hunger and poverty as “empty talk.”

“Atiku was vice president for eight years. Why didn’t he lay the foundation to prevent hunger then? Now he keeps talking about hunger and revolution. For me, I don’t even bother reading what he says, because there is no truth in it,” he declared.

The minister urged Nigerians to be patient with the Tinubu administration, warning opposition leaders against exploiting current economic challenges for political gain.
