The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as politically irrelevant in Abuja, arguing that a party unable to secure a single councillorship seat in the recent area council elections cannot claim national stature.
Wike made the remarks on Tuesday during a post-election appreciation visit to the Bwari Area Council, where he addressed supporters and traditional leaders.
Taking a swipe at opposition figures, the minister criticized what he termed performative politics, accusing some leaders of engaging in symbolic public gestures without delivering tangible development while in office.
“I don’t know fake people. They say they are a national party, yet they cannot win a single councillorship seat. Out of sixty-two wards, not one. Is that a party?” Wike said. “Today, the ruling party is the APC, and the opposition is the PDP. The others, I don’t know where they stand.”
He stressed that governance under President Bola Tinubu is focused on practical leadership that responds to citizens’ economic challenges rather than symbolic politics.
Reaffirming his administration’s development agenda, Wike pledged to complete the ongoing Bwari–Kubwa road project before the end of 2026. He described the project as part of a broader commitment to infrastructure expansion across the FCT.
“Agreement is agreement. You have fulfilled your part by supporting the president’s candidates. It is now my turn to fulfill mine,” he said, adding that he would work closely with the newly elected council chairman to ensure continuity and efficiency.
Responding, Chairman-elect Joshua Ishaku described the minister’s visit as an uncommon gesture of humility, noting that council officials had planned to visit him in his office to express appreciation.
“We are overwhelmed. We can see and feel the developmental strides achieved in just two years,” Ishaku said, pledging continued support for the administration’s “Renewed Hope” agenda ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He also called on the minister to sustain his infrastructure drive by constructing more schools and healthcare facilities to accelerate development in Bwari.
