An Austrian economist and pro-NATO advocate, Gunther Fehlinger, has urged the United States and the European Union to recognize and support the independence of the Biafra Republic, describing Nigeria as a “failed nation.”

Fehlinger made the call on Monday via posts shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, where he criticized the international community for what he described as its past failure to support Biafra during the 1967–1970 civil war.

“I call the EU to recognize the Biafra Republic emerging out of failed #ExNigeria,” he wrote. “The Free World failed Biafra in 1967 to 1970 during their liberation war — to our eternal shame. We must make up for our failure and endorse the Biafra Republic now, @POTUS.”

In a follow-up post on Sunday, the economist also appealed to Washington, tagging official Biafra government handles, saying: “America must liberate Biafra Republic @Biafra_Govt @BiafraMFA.”

Fehlinger, who is known for his vocal support of NATO expansion and advocacy for Western-aligned democracies, has in recent months criticized governance and security lapses in parts of Africa, particularly in Nigeria.

His remarks come amid renewed international debate on alleged persecution and violence against Christians and ethnic minorities in Nigeria’s northern and southeastern regions.

Although Fehlinger’s comments have drawn attention online, there has been no official response from the Nigerian government or international bodies regarding his calls for Biafra’s recognition.
