Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has yet to officially confirm any plans to defect from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), despite widespread speculation.
Earlier reports suggested Monday, January 12, 2026, would mark the governor’s formal registration into the APC at his Ɗiso Ward office in Gwale Local Government Area, Kano. However, expectations at the ward level were not confirmed.
Speaking to DAILY POST, Malam Maje Kabir Ahmad, Chairman of the APC in Ɗiso Ward, said the party had not received any official directive regarding the governor’s visit for registration and collection of an APC membership card.
“We have not received any instruction from above concerning the governor’s coming today. Nevertheless, we are fully prepared. Even if it is late at night and the governor decides to register today, we will be ready to receive him,” Maje stated.
He described Ɗiso Ward as politically strategic, noting it is home to key figures, including the Kano State APC Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, who shares both family and political ties with Governor Yusuf. “Without doubt, the governor’s return to the APC would have a significant impact on the political landscape and development of Kano State,” he added.
The APC ward office, a single-room facility beside the Gwale Local Government Secretariat, is currently undergoing renovations to improve its infrastructure ahead of the anticipated defection.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, DAILY POST observed that Governor Yusuf was at the State House leading a graduation ceremony for 2,260 beneficiaries of the Kano State Government’s vocational skills acquisition programme. The governor distributed empowerment tools and support materials to promote youth self-reliance and employment opportunities.
Political observers noted a notable absence of Kwankwasiyya references during the event—no mention of its leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, nor the movement’s signature songs—raising further speculation about Governor Yusuf’s political future and possible defection to the APC.
The APC in Ɗiso Ward maintains readiness to receive the governor whenever he decides to formalize his move, but for now, the timing of any official defection remains uncertain.
