Trump Signals Deal With NATO Over Greenland, Reiterates U.S. Security Interest

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has said the United States and its NATO allies would eventually “work something out” over the long-running dispute concerning Greenland, insisting that any outcome would satisfy all sides.

“I think that we will work something out where NATO’s going to be very happy and where we’re going to be very happy,” Trump said, speaking hours before departing for the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Trump once again stressed that Greenland is strategically important to the United States, citing security concerns. When asked how far he would be prepared to go to bring the Arctic island under U.S. control, he replied cryptically: “You’ll find out.”

He also disclosed that Washington had planned several meetings on Greenland during the high-profile Davos forum, though he declined to specify who would participate. Trump had earlier indicated that discussions involving the U.S. and European stakeholders would take place on the sidelines of the event.

Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, has been at the center of diplomatic tension since Trump first expressed interest in acquiring the island. European NATO allies have since publicly voiced their support for Denmark and Greenland.

In response, Trump warned that the United States could impose punitive tariffs from February 1 as a means of pressuring those opposed to a sale of the territory.

Addressing resistance among Greenlanders themselves, Trump dismissed concerns, saying: “When I speak to them, I’m sure they’ll be thrilled.”

His remarks are likely to reignite debate among NATO allies and European leaders over sovereignty, security, and the future of the strategically vital Arctic region.
